Applying for LSTA Grants

LSTA grants are available when notice is given in this libguide, under the conditions described.  All LSTA grants use an application process, each program having a specific application form and instructions. Explore the resources below to learn more about how to apply for an LSTA grant, how to design a competitive application, and other information about grant management.

LSTA Competitive Grant Descriptions

The LSTA Competitive Grants Program for FFY16 (October 2016-September 2017) includes the following funding opportunities: 

  • Large Competitive Grants. Application period for the FFY16 cycle (State FY17) will begin after January 1, 2017.  Check back for new dates.
  • LSTA Mini-Grants. Projects will be announced as they become available. Applications will be posted below. 
  • Summer Reading Resource Grants. Grants up to $1000 will be available for Summer Reading Programs in 2017.  This funding program is for public libraries only.
  • Tuition Assistance Grants. These are available in limited amounts for each semester. Tuition grant applications are OPEN with limited funds for the Spring and Summer 2017 sessions.
  • Continuing Education Grants. Application is open for CE opportunities including conference attendance. Typical awards are $750 for in-state conferences/classes and $1000 for out-of-state conferences/classes, and $500 for a multi-session online course. Additional funding is set aside for the Collaborative Summer Library Program annual meeting and extra responsibilities. 
  • Planning Grants. Grants up to $2500 are for funding strategic planning and community needs assessment for public libraries.

Note on grant expenditures for mileage reimbursement:  For grants with travel that includes mileage (driving a car instead of flying), the rate of reimbursement is $0.54/mile.  (2015-2016 General Appropriations Act in Proviso 117.20.J, IRS Revenue IR 2015-137)
